After his warmly received 2015 EP Support Your Local Bookshop,
wandering troubadour Gar Cox has released his first full-band
EP, Tombstone Heart. Produced with Gavin Glass (known
for his work with Lisa Hannigan as well as his own solo
career), Tombstone Heart features four rich, concise songs
reflecting on the trials and triumphs of the human heart.
Guest appearances on the EP include virtuoso guitar by
Niall Thomas, and guest vocals from original Pogues member
Recorded at Glass's own Orphan Studios in the summer
of 2017, the EP runs the gamut from the upbeat title
track to the reflective ballad 'We Lose People', and
from the rollicking 'Other People Call Me Baby' (featuring
O'Riordan) to the elegant, and timely, anti-Fascist
torch song 'Teuton Square'. Each of the songs is tied
together by Gar's soulful voice, literate song-writing
and defiant spirit.
Gar (47) is an authentic latter day hobo. After leaving
his Carlow home at 17, he travelled the globe as a musician,
a stowaway and a helium balloon salesman - to name just
a few of his vocations. Gar draws on a lifetime of adventures
and misadventures, and his perspective as a song-writer
is humorous but sincere, incisive but kind-hearted.
Above all, his songs come from a love of people, the
stories they tell and the lives they lead.
The artwork for the EP is by highly regarded Irish
artist Niamh McCann (www.niamhmccann.com).
Gar launched the Tombstone Heart EP with a sold-out
show at Dublin's newest venue, the East Side Tavern,
on October 18, 2017, with guests Alice Jago and Gavin
